Sri Lankan Muslims; Despicable attack on Iftar party at Akkaraipattu!

ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. This is how one could describe the shameful and disgusting attack on Muslims by Muslims during an Iftar gathering at Akkaraipattu in the eastern Sri Lanka on Monday 13 August 2012. By all means this was a heinous crime committed by thugs, hooligans and gangsters who call themselves Muslims. The irony is that never in the centuries old history of Muslims in this country even non-Muslims ever committed such dastardly crime bringing unprecedented disrepute to Muslim community which was hailed by former Chief Justice Sarath N Silva as the most peaceful people in the island. The Islamic Perspective on the Olympics


The closing ceremonies for the London Olympics were performed on August 12th for over ten thousand athletes from 204 nations. It was estimated that 8 million people attended the games in person and close to 4 billion people watched the games from around the world. This year’s Olympics were considered unique for many due to the fact that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Brunei had sent women participants for the very first time in their history. The massacre of the Rohingya has exposed the hypocrisy of international bodies like the UN, human rights organisations and the global media. Just compare the lack of coverage about the plight of the Rohingya Muslims with the coverage of the house of arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi over many years. Some have described them as the most persecuted minority in the world, yet the lack of prominence given to their cause show exactly how politicized humanitarian and human rights campaigning bodies are. Sri Lankan government moves to gag web sites

The regulations would extend the coverage of the Press Council, a government tribunal that can fine and jail journalists, to web sites as well as other media outlets. This step is part of an intensifying attack on media and democratic rights, designed to strengthen the police-state apparatus developed by President Mahinda Rajapakse amid an intensifying economic and political crisis.
